THE EARLY SPANIARDS

… "ORE" ….

OLDEN GOLDIES
Cortez

"We Spaniards have a disease of the heart, for which the only cure is gold."  Cortes

The Spaniards came into the area around the 1500's to look for the famous Seven Cities of Gold (Cibola). In fact, Coronado was involved in this search for these fabled cities made of pure gold. Some unconvincing reports indicate that the famous Conquistador named the mountains "Monte Superstition", because his troops kept disappearing whenever they went into the mysterious area.

Spanish Mission

As time passed, the Spaniards convinced the Indians to help them find gold and even promised limited citizenship for their help. Remember that the Indians had never seen horses, guns, and white skin before, and for a time, believed that the Spaniards were Gods. Conditions changed, however, and the Indians started to be treated as slaves. As a result, there were many uprisings and the Spaniards had to abandon many of their missions and pueblos until the late 1600's.

About a century later, the Jesuits, a religious order founded by Loyola, were thrown out of power for hoarding (PG Rated) gold and lost influence in the Spanish government. Some believe that the Lost Dutchman Gold came from a Jesuit cache. The Jesuits were then replaced by the Franciscans. (Read more about these guys in our forthcoming unabridged book, Words to Jump Bye, based on the golden Tony Bennet song. - SEE GRAND SLAMMERS).

While researching the Legend of the Lost Dutchman for the Goldbuster Guidebook that accompanied the Superstition Gold album, DoubleTake found many things about Gold.  NOTE: MANY OF THE WEB PAGES USED IN THE GOLD 'N STUFF SECTION HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM THE GUIDEBOOK, BUT HAVE BEEN EDITED FOR THE INTERNET AND DO NOT NECESSARILY USE IN"CLUE" INFORMATION ABOUT THE DT'S SEARCH FOR THE GOLD.
