pot of gold

As the title imp-lies, (watch out for an imp who lies, otherwise known as a leprechaun) there's lots of fools and there's lots to be fooled about. This page and the ones that follow will discuss many of the "discoveries" and mysterious deaths that surround the Legend.

APRIL'S FOOL'S GOLD

An amazing story about fools and gold in the Superstitions was well documented by a bestseller book entitled "The Killer Mountains". The following April, a 1966 UPI Release showed the excitement that was generated by this "discovery" of the mine:

APRIL 29, 1966 UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL RELEASE:

FABLED GOLD MINE (CAPS)

6 SAY THEY FOUND " LOST DUTCHMAN" (CAPS)

OKLAHOMA CITY (UPI)

A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR SAID YESTERDAY THAT HE AND FIVE ASSOCIATES HAD DEFINITELY LOCATED THE LEGENDARY LOST DUTCHMAN MINE (CAP L.D.)

ARIZONA'S SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS (CAPS)

"WE DON'T THINK WE HAVE THE RIGHT MINE" SAID GLEN MAGILL, "WE KNOW WE DO."  MAGILL SAID THE GROUP HAD USED MAPS OBTAINED FROM A MAN WHOSE FATHER WAS SLAIN IN THE SUPERSTITION MOUNTAINS 35 YEARS AGO.  HE SAID THEY HAD REMOVED NUGGETS FROM THE MINE AND FOUND THEM TO BE "ALMOST PURE GOLD".

RICHES
"I BELIEVE THE MINE IS EVEN RICHER THAN ANYONE CAN IMAGINE," MAGILL SAID.  "THE DUTCHMAN SAID IT HAD THE WEALTH OF MANY MINES. I DON'T BELIEVE HE FULLY UNDERSTOOD HOW WEALTHY IT REALLY WAS".  HE SAID THE MAPS AND NUGGETS WERE KEPT IN A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX AND WERE NEVER CARRIED BY THE SEARCHERS.

MAGILL SAID HE AND HIS ASSOCIATES WERE CHECKING THE LEGAL STATUS OF THEIR FIND AND WOULD NOT REVEAL ITS LOCATION EXCEPT THAT IT WAS IN A GOVERNMENT AREA.

CLUES
"IT'S JUST EXACTLY WHERE THE DUTCHMAN TOLD EVERYBODY IT WAS," HE SAID.  "IT'S RIGHT ON THE SPOT.  HE LEFT MANY CLUES TO THE LOCATION AND EVERYONE OF THEM CHECKED OUT."  HE SAID THE GROUP HAD LOCATED CAMPS OF THE DUTCHMAN, A GERMAN IMMIGRANT NAMED JACOB WALTZ WHO DIED IN PHOENIX IN 1891.  MAGILL SAID HE HAD OWNED ONE MAP FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND OBTAINED THE OTHER THREE ABOUT FOUR MONTHS AGO FROM DR. ERWIN RUTH, OF WASHINGTON, D.C., SON OF ADOLPH RUTH, WHO WAS MYSTERIOUSLY SLAIN IN 1931 WHILE SEARCHING FOR THE LOST MINE.

The mine was reported to have been on Bluff Spring Mountain in the Superstitions and was in the shape of a funnel -- Waltz had also indicated this shape.  The book alluded to many mysterious happenings and ended up with the expedition running out of money and being unable to re-locate the find.

While researching the Legend of the Lost Dutchman for the Goldbuster Guidebook that accompanied the Superstition Gold album, DoubleTake found many things about Gold.  NOTE: MANY OF THE WEB PAGES USED IN THE GOLD 'N STUFF SECTION HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM THE GUIDEBOOK, BUT HAVE BEEN EDITED FOR THE INTERNET AND DO NOT NECESSARILY USE IN"CLUE" INFORMATION ABOUT THE DT'S SEARCH FOR THE GOLD.
