THE MINER LEAGUES

Gold was discovered in South Africa by George Harrison, who found a "reef" outcropping in 1886.  (good greef, are the Beatles that old?)

Robert Henderson and George Washington Carmack (no relation to Johnny Carson) discovered gold on the Thron-Diuk (Klondike) in 1896.

The first gold strike in the U.S.A. was in 1799 at Meadow Creek, North Carolina. (50 mines by 1850)

Most of the gold in the world is produced in South Africa.

The Beatles

The start of the California gold rush occurred in 1848, when James Marshall found gold in California at John Sutter’s mill.  (just milling around or was it Miller time? And if Bob Dylan went back in history and took over Marshall’s body, would he have a sidekick with a bad leg?)

By 1849, forty thousand men were working in the gold fields of California. In 1850, the population was 92.5 percent male.

Some gold refineries shut down once a year to clean their chimneys and rooftops to extract particles of gold.

Sea Hunt

In the 1960's, a group of amateur divers located most of the Spanish vessels that had been wrecked in 1715.  They are known today as Reals & Co., or Real 8 Divers.   (See Hunt ... Or would that be one two many a Bridges to cross?) (see ALPHA BETS )

The smallest gold was an alluvial deposit on Oregon’s snake river, taking 5,000 particles to make a penny's worth.

A London bullion firm used to take up the wooden floor of its vault and burn it to melt out specks of gold that had rubbed off the bullion bars.

When Marco Polo traveled to China, he reported the use of divining rods to locate objects.  (Some claim these can be used to find gold, or would that be by divine right?)

A 150 lb. gold nugget was called the "welcome nugget" & "welcome stranger".  It was discovered in Victoria, australia  in a rut made by a wagon wheel.

In the gold fields of Transylvania, gold has been found in the form of wire and thin plates.

Edward Hammond (no relation to Leslie - organs) is considered the Australian founder of gold in 1850.

Quicksilver, better known as mercury, is used to extract gold from other metals.

By 1850, only 10,000 tons of gold had been mined.  It has been estimated that 90,000 tons of gold have been mined throughout history.
